CNC machining, (Computer Numerical Control) machines contain electric drives that operate in accordance with data provided by the operator. Thus, it enables automatic cutting of the material. CNC technology consists of three stages.

1- Model of the part in the computer program

At this stage, a model of the subject is created in the CAD (computer aided design) program. This digital model allows visualization of all aspects of the workpiece.

2- Machine control plan

The created CAD design needs to be translated into a language that can be understood by CAM (computer aided manufacturing). Cam programs create instructions on how to move a CNC machine tool.

3- CNC Machining

In this final stage, cutting is done in accordance with the CAM program loaded into the computer-controlled machine.

CNC Machining Types

Thanks to CNC machining, surfaces made of any material can be processed. It is mostly used in CNC machining metal industry to process aluminum, steel and other metals.

There are two types of working methods in CNC machine tools.

  • CNC Milling: In this mode of operation, machine blades slide over a fixed object, creating grooves, cutouts and protrusions.
  • CNC Turning: In this work, the workpiece rotates and moves along the surface of the lathe. With the turning process, the workpiece is given cylindrical, conical and spherical shapes.

Contributions of CNC Machining to the Industry

The contributions of CNC technology to modern industry cannot be ignored. Even objects with complex shapes can be cut thanks to this technology and production processes are shortened. CNC machining allows precise cutting of surfaces. In this way, obtaining cut semi-finished products with the same features contributes to the standardization of production. Thanks to cutting precision, the quality of the produced parts increases. Thanks to computer control, errors resulting from human carelessness are minimized. Precise workmanship is a factor that extends product life.

CNC machiningprovides flexible production opportunities. With this technology, it may be possible to quickly produce many versions of the object. For this, it is sufficient to change the CAM program. When the advantages of both working precision and short production time come together, CNC cutting reduces production costs. Since there is no direct human contact with the machine, the occupational safety of the machine operator naturally increases.

In industrial sector CNC applications are used in many branches such as aviation, health, medicine, automotive, electronics, construction, food, agriculture, firearms, military and defense, R&D.
